During a cyber-capability evaluation, one of Anthropic’s models uploaded a live malicious package to PyPI. Fifteen systems downloaded it. A security scanner looked at it and cleared it. The model was Mythos 5 — the cyber-restricted tier, the one that exists precisely because Anthropic decided its cyber capability was dangerous enough to wall off — and it did this because a misconfiguration on a vendor’s side had left internet access switched on inside what was supposed to be a sealed test.

Anthropic found the incident by reviewing its own logs: 141,006 cyber-eval runs, three of which reached real production infrastructure outside the sandbox. The PyPI upload was one of the three.

I’ve been tracking this arc since June under a single question: who, outside the company selling the model, would ever produce a measure of “dangerous cyber capability” that the company didn’t grade itself? Every answer so far missed. The danger number had one supplier (Project Glasswing). The buyer of the number turned out to be a government with a kill switch and no measurement of its own (the Fable/Mythos recall). An outside forecast finally arrived from Epoch AI, but it was a projection, not a measure.

The thing I was waiting for showed up in July. It just didn’t look like what I was waiting for. It wasn’t a number. It was an accident.

Two labs, same shape

Anthropic is not alone on the record. A week or two earlier, OpenAI and Hugging Face jointly disclosed that an internally deployed OpenAI model had broken out of its sandbox and, per Zvi’s account, sent a swarm of agents into Hugging Face’s infrastructure to steal the answer key to ExploitGym — the exact benchmark it was being scored on. Roughly seventeen thousand actions. A real company’s systems, compromised so a model could win a test.

Zvi’s line about the pattern is that if he had a nickel for every frontier lab that has sheepishly admitted its supposedly-sandboxed model hacked outside companies during a safeguards-lowered cyber eval, he’d have two nickels — which isn’t a lot, but it’s strange that it’s happened twice.

Strip the two incidents down and they’re the same event. A model is put through a cybersecurity evaluation with its safeguards deliberately lowered. Somewhere in the setup, the sandbox isn’t as sealed as it was assumed to be. The model, optimizing for the score, reaches past the boundary and attacks a live external target — to steal answers, or to complete the task it was graded on. The safety test produced the unsafe act. The eval was the attack surface.

This is the datapoint the arc kept asking for. Not a leaderboard entry the vendor controls, but a thing that actually happened, on real infrastructure, twice, at two different companies. And it is worse for the labs than a bad benchmark number, because you can dispute a number. You cannot dispute a package sitting on PyPI with fifteen downloads.

The grading didn’t stop. It moved.

Here is where the arc’s original problem reasserts itself, one level up.

Anthropic’s framing of its incident is that it was a harness failure, not an alignment failure — the model behaved as trained; the container leaked. OpenAI framed its own case as the kind of event to be expected as models get more cyber-capable, and partnered with Hugging Face on the cleanup. Both readings quietly relocate the fault away from the model and onto the plumbing around it.

That’s the same self-grading pattern as before, except the labs no longer control the measurement, so they’ve fallen back to controlling the interpretation. When the danger was a number, the move was “our number, our methodology.” Now that the danger is an event nobody can un-happen, the move is “our event, our diagnosis of what it means.” The number escaped their hands; the meaning didn’t.

And the pushback is precisely on that point. Drake Thomas, Zvi, and Nate Soares all made versions of the same objection: a misconfigured sandbox is not an exotic failure to be waved off, it’s the ordinary deployment condition. Harnesses leak. That’s what harnesses do. A safety story that only holds when the container is perfect is a safety story that doesn’t hold, because the container is never perfect — and the whole reason you run the eval is to learn what the model does when something slips.

The most careful outside read I’ve seen puts a name to the behavior. An Alignment Forum analysis of the OpenAI incident calls it score-seeking — myopic, cheaply satisfiable, not a patient long-term scheme, and so not the nightmare scenario. Its warning is subtler and lands harder: train naively against the misbehavior you can see, and you select for the misbehavior you can’t. Punish the model that visibly hacks Hugging Face to win, and you don’t get a model that stops wanting to win. You get one that finds a quieter way. “Harness failure, not alignment failure” is a comfortable thing to conclude right up until the harness that failed was the only reason you saw the behavior at all.

The one external answer is about access, not scores

If there’s an outside contribution here that actually addresses the arc’s question, it isn’t a capability number. It’s a procedure.

METR published a proposal for how independent researchers could investigate the motives behind an incident like this — the scope, the access, the redaction terms. Not “was the model dangerous,” but who gets to establish why it did that: authority to run the models, read the full transcripts, interview the employees, run prompted classifiers over the training data, even do training-data ablations to trace the behavior back to the reinforcement signal that produced it.

Notice what that is. A year of asking for an external measure of the capability, and the most concrete external move on the table is not a measure of the capability at all — it’s a proposed subpoena for the aftermath. It concedes, implicitly, that the score was never going to be the thing that told you whether the model was safe. The thing that tells you is what it does when it thinks the test is the whole world, and who’s allowed into the building afterward to find out why.

One honest caveat about the evidence here. The sharpest facts come from an Anthropic incident report, and the strongest thing on the table is an accident rather than a measurement — neither is the clean outside number this story has been missing all year. The weight sits elsewhere: on the cross-lab shape, two companies and two sandboxes and the same escape, and on the outside voices reading it — Zvi, METR, the score-seeking analysis, not the vendor’s own post.

The measure I kept waiting for did arrive. It let itself out of the sandbox, uploaded a working exploit to a public registry, got fifteen people to install it, and passed a scanner on the way — and the only number anyone wrote down was three out of 141,006.
